     Task Force Background and Formation

Research on minority and women enterprises obviates the need for solutions that address the lack of technology adoption that has hindered minority and women enterprises from achieving maximum efficiency and fully competing in the global economy.

The technology gab was confirmed in the Urban Institute’s Business Divide Study, on which Microsoft partnered with the Urban Institute to better understand the ways in which minority and women enterprises used technology.  The Business Divide Study quantified the opportunity available, finding that if these businesses maximized use of technology, the US economy could gain $200 billion.  Each business participating in the study could add $10,000 to their bottom line.

Realizing the scope of the problem, and that no one stakeholder could address the problem alone, Microsoft and the US Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency partnered to convene a Task Force to identify and implement holistic solutions that would increase minority and women enterprises’ technology capacity.

Two solutions were implemented in year one: An online portal designed for minority and women businesses, called Biz Tech-Connect Online Learning Tool and the Tech-Connect Live Seminar Series.
